Planning For A Gathering That's "Grand"...

Good Morning! Ok, I'm going to type it...I'm not a huge fan of Winnie the Pooh and friends. There. I said it. But I know that there are a lot of people who are, and I don't want to leave anyone out- lol. This picture was taken in 1998 at the opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom park, and I am genuinely smiling. :)

Tip of the Day: When visiting Disney's Animal Kingdom during the summer months; as it can be very hot for you, it is also very hot for the animals that live there. So try and hit Kilamanjaro Safari in the morning if not first thing you do. There's a better chance of seeing them out and about rather than laying down or in the shade of a tree as the afternoon wears on and the temperatures climb. :)

What's most important to you while on vacation? I can guarantee that it's not the same thing as the person next to you or even in your family for that matter. Everybody is different and everybody deserves to be able to do what is most important to them while on vacation whether it's in Mexico, the Caribbean, or Walt Disney World.

Large groups have been visiting for decades, whether these are school trips, family reunions, or a group of friends gathering for a few days at "the happiest place on Earth". Obviously not everyone is going to want to do the same things at the same times. Cell phones have greatly helped in these situations, people don't have to find people without them. But if you have a party of 8 or more, navigating Walt Disney World and creating a plan that will make everyone happy can be challenging.

First off, let the person planning your trip (hopefully me) set up a Grand Gathering for you. These are designated by Disney for groups of eight or more so it's easier to keep track of everything. More rooms are needed and they can get you all in the same area or hopefully next door to each other if that's what you like and everyone has the same room type. Each Grand Gathering is given a name, such as "Smith Family Reunion" or something like that to identify them during the planning/booking process.

There are also Grand Gathering experiences that are reserved for guests on a grand gathering only. These are unique meals with characters, experiences such as a pirate river cruise and other fun things! What's my recommendation for people travelling with large parties at Walt Disney World? Plan, plan, plan!! Not to the point where you're planning bathroom breaks of course, but have a game plan for each day, don't be upset when different people want to do different things. Just set up times to meet for meals or maybe a specific show or attraction. This will assist more in making everyone happy and create a magical vacation for all. :)

Which Parks Would You Like to Visit Today? All Four? No Problem...Hop-Away!

Good Morning! Isn't this a pretty picture of the castle? Arguable the most photographed structure at the Walt Disney World Resort and I have pictures of it from almost every angle! Here's the age-old question, and one that every current and past cast member knows: How many bricks did it take to build Cinderella's Castle at the Magic Kingdom? The answer is at the end of this blog!

Travel Tip for Disney World of the Day: When visiting the Disney Hollywood Studios, there are a lot of attractions that have specific show times. Make sure you either pick up your times guide at the front of the park (this should be done at every park upon entering each visit), or you can stop by the show times bulletin board that is located on the right hand side of Hollywood Boulevard just at the corner of Sunset Boulevard. This will ensure that you can have a plan for the day. Can't decide which shows to absolutely not miss? Here's an idea...have each person in your party pick one that they absolutely want to see and plan your day accordingly! This should help when trying to make everyone happy! :)

Yesterday I was blogging about adding on the Water Park Fun and More option to the Magic Your Way ticket. It's a great addition to your fun when visiting the Walt Disney World Resort and gives you a thing that's held at a high regard for the guests who visit, flexibility. I'm a big fan of planning for the unforseen. You never know what is going to happen, and the unexpected usually does. Even at Disney World.

Another great option that can be added on to the Magic Your Way ticket is the most popular add on, the Park Hopper option. This is a great way to cover all your bases during your vacation and not having to worry about missing anything. The Park Hopper option is a flat fee added onto each ticket (as of right now, 06/29/10, it's an additional $52.00...but the prices are subject to change at any time!) that enables you the guest to "hop" from park to park anytime during their hours of operation! The parks included on the park hopper ticket are The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, The Disney Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom.

The way I like to give examples usually involves dining, as I love to eat at Walt Disney World restaurants. The Park Hopper option will allow you to start your day with breakfast at Cinderella's Royal Table at the Magic Kingdom, hop to the Disney Hollywood Studios for a show and a quick bite of lunch at The ABC Commissary, and after going back to your resort to change and relax a bit, hop back to EPCOT for dinner at Le Chefs de France! Doesn't that sound like a delicious way to spend your day? And with all that "hopping" believe me, you'll work up an appetite! :)

Answer to the trivia question: None. Cinderella's Castle at the Magic Kingdom is made of fiberglass!!

82 Degrees and Sunny!

Good Morning! It's damp and cloudy here where I live and I can't help but long to be in the sunshine state today and soak up some of those Florida rays. Where's a perfect place to do that? I be you know what I'm going to say... :) Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon of course!
Both water parks at Walt Disney World are loads of fun in the sun, but oftentimes two of the most not-purchased add-on's to the park tickets. Most times because people are going in off months and feel it would be too cold to go to a water park. Hellllooooo?!! This is Florida, people! Not to mention that the water in the pools on property during the off season months are kept at a comfortable 82 degrees. In December at Typhoon Lagoon in the water will be lovely....I can't say about when you get out of the water though. :)

Everybody's different though, you'll see people from the UK in the water in January where someone from Georgia walking by looking at them might shudder. (Yes, the above picture is of the pool at Disney's Yacht Club, but I'm illustrating the 82 degrees for you.) :)

There are two different ways to gain access to either Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. You could buy a one day water park ticket to whichever one you want to go to at the gate of that park when you get there or add on the Water Park Fun and More option to your Magic Your Way Ticket. The add on option gives you more flexibility during your vacation on what you can take advantage of during your stay at Walt Disney World. It also depends on the number of theme park days that you purchase to know how many water park days you'll get. With the exception of a one day theme park ticket**, the water park fun and more option coincides with the number of days your theme park ticket is.

For example, if you purchased a 5 day Magic Your Way Ticket and add on the Water Park Fun and More option, you'll get 5 additional visits (that don't count at all towards your Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney Hollywood Studios, or Animal Kingdom) to either Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach, DisneyQuest, The Wode World of Sports Complex, or a round of golf at Disney's nine hole walking course, Oak Trail. WOW!

And you can use them in any combination you like!

Here's an example:
Say you purchase a 4 day Magic Your Way Park Hopper Ticket with the Water Park Fun and More option. You have 10 days from the first time you use the ticket to take advantage of all it offers. So besides hopping at any time of day while they're open between the four major theme parks; you can also play a round of golf in the morning at 7 am at Disney's Oak Trail course (make reservations!!), go to breakfast at the Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom with Winnie the Pooh and friends, have a daquiri while you watch your kids play on the water slides and the wave pools at Typhoon Lagoon in the afternoon, and then after a quick change back at your resort, enjoy a fantastic dinner at Teppan Edo in Japan at EPCOT. Now what did you use on your ticket in one day? One theme park day and two water park fun and more visits. You would have 3 theme park days left and 2 water park fun and more visits to use in the next nine days. :) Sounds like a fantastic vacation to me!

Ticket prices are subject to change, and the price for an add-on is different than if you wanted to gain entry for one day.

**The exception for the one day theme park ticket is that the Water Park Fun and More add on would be 2 visits instead of one. :)

Hope You're Getting What You Paid For...

I have LOADS to update on this blog! Man, all I do is book vacations...but if I go on one, I get sooo far behind! I'm sure you've all missed me!

I wanted to blog about something that came to my attention yesterday. A very dear friend and colleague of mine had clients who went to Walt Disney World last week on a vacation package. She called me upset because when their vacation was over and they were checking out of the resort, they had about a weeks worth of unused dining credits EACH left on their dining plan! How did this happen???

Well, there was obviously a misunderstanding somewhere in the works here. And unfortunately I don't want to immediately blame the guest, but if you didn't fully understand what you purchased when you were purchasing it (or for that matter even ANYTIME before you went on vacation) then it is not anyone else's job to clean it up. I know that sounds harsh, but I honestly felt bad for my friend. She has been in the travel industry about 10 years longer than me and I can vouch for the fact that she fully understands what she's talking about when she's selling the Walt Disney product. Yes, I understand that sometimes these things happen, but pointing fingers is not the way to resolve it.

When she called me yesterday she asked me if the front desk cast members go over the dining plan when a guest checks in. Usually not. They may ask "Do you have any questions" but I believe that they are under the assumption that the guest understands what they've purchased. In this case, the clients are claiming that they thought they could only use their dining plan for the meals that are booked. So every time they went to a quick service location they paid out of pocket. The dining plan of course covers these restaurants, and when they checked out they had loads of unused meals from the quick service locations. Why would you purchase a dining plan and think you had to pay out of pocket for any meal?

This situation has prompted me to go over the dining plan in my blog. I can spell it out and please, if anyone out there has any questions about it, don't hesitate to ask.

I think the main problem came from the fact that people get confused thinking that the different meal types (table service, quick service, and snack) are for specific meal periods (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). This is not the case. It doesn't matter whether you use you table services at breakfast, lunch, or dinner, it just matters that it's a table service meal.

A "table service" or sit down meal is any restaurant on property that you (usually) make a reservation for, sit down at a table, and get served by a server. Whether it's at breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Of course you would think that you'd get the most "bang for your buck" using your table service meals for dinners, as they are the most expensive meals and this is true. But remember, if you can't get into Chef Mickey's Buffet at Disney's Contemporary Resort for dinner there is a fantastic breakfast that has the same characters and fun, lively atmosphere as the dinner meal period and yes, counts as a table service too!

There are some table service meals that if you were to pay out of pocket would cost a little more. These are restaurants that are dressier, more upscale such as The California Grill, Narcoossee's, or Jiko. And one character meal; Cinderella's Royal Table...such restaurants as these require 2 table service meals each. But no worries, you're not given any paper vouchers to hand over and keep track of, it's all electronically scanned on you "key to the kingdom" card which is also your room key and your park ticket. Every time you hand over the card to be scanned at any type of meal you should receive a receipt with the remaining balance of meals on it for each card so you know exactly what you have left. And if you're not given one...ask for it.

A "quick service" meal is any restaurant on property where you as the guest would walk up to the counter and order a meal that is usually served on a tray. But don't discount these meals as hamburgers and fries. As they do have this type of fare, you can get almost any kind of cuisine you can think of as a counter service meal. Fish and chips, sushi, tacos, huge sandwiches, and anywhere on property. This is true for any restaurant location on the dining plan in the resorts, parks, or Downtown Disney that participates...there's over 200!!

A "snack" is going to be any place you go to in the parks that have a cart where you can get anything from ice cream or popcorn to a bottle of soda. Or you can go in the merchandise locations and get a bag of trail mix, candy, or something like that.

If you are confused as to what constitutes a table service, counter service, or snack...ask! Any cast member will be happy to help you out before you purchase something. The only time you will be regularly asked by a cast member if you are on the dining plan is at the table service meals in the beginning of the meal by your server, and the only thing that you should be paying for out of pocket if you purchased the dining plan is the tips for your servers which is not included.

Of course there are different guidelines depending on which plan you purchase and I have gone over the basics of the regular plan. There is also a quick service plan and a deluxe plan, and you can add a "wine and dine" option onto the regular one.

I think the dining plan is a fantastic option to add onto your Walt Disney World vacation and not to be passed up because it really does end up saving you money in the long run. Walt Disney World is one of the only vacation destinations in the continental US where you can create an "all inclusive" package, and it really is another reason to visit soon. But know what you buy because no matter where you go, whether it is Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Paris, or Timbuktu, if you don't know what you paid for and don't have all the information you will end up losing money and turning something that is supposed to be a dream vacation into a nightmare.

Take a Moment and Enjoy

I've been very busy lately, and busy is good! It's great actually! I have to live vicariously through some of my clients I guess, and I enjoy helping them have their "magical" Walt Disney World vacations. It makes me smile when I hear that they had fun, and when I see their pictures too. Soon a link is coming to this blog...called something along the lines of "satisfied customers". :)

Now on to your Walt Disney World tip of the day... if you've brought your vehicle with you and you have a park hopper ticket because you think you may go to more than one park in a day, park wherever you think you may end up. I know it requires a bit of planning on vacation, but believe you me, you will be thankful at the end of a long day of park hopping to have your car at the location you are at rather than having to travel back to where you started from to get it. Just thinkin' ahead!

And as you're walking around the parks, take your time. Enjoy the little things that a lot of people don't bother to while they're running to catch the time on their fastpasses. A perfect example of this are the pictures above. While my friend Sabrina and I were walking around EPCOT we stopped to take a moment in China (where's there's fabulous Chinese food) and play with the toys on the carts in the walkway. Did you know that in the different country pavilions at EPCOT there's painstaking attention to detail in the little things. From the architecture of the buildings, to the cast members on an international visa to work there, it's as close to that certain country you can get without a passport. We were trying to use the Chinese Flower Sticks with no success. Then the cast member who was working the merchandise cart picked them up and made it look like the easiest thing in the world! He had to give us points for trying!!

...You stay in Wonderland, and I'll show you how deep the rabbit hole goes..." :)

With the recent release of Alice in Wonderland (the movie starring Johnny Depp) on DVD and Disney Blue Ray, I feel the urge to blog today about my favorite Disney animated picture, Alice in Wonderland. Well, more like anywhere you can find Alice or her friends at the Walt Disney World Resort.

In the Magic Kingdom park you can find a few tidbits here and there, of course there's the Mad Hatter's Tea Party in Fantasyland (one of my favorite attractions), and each year so far during the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party they have a whole Alice in Wonderland-type maze!

I've seen the Queen of Hearts at EPCOT, but that's because you can find Alice in Wonderland merchandise in the United Kingdom pavilion there. It's the whole British and tea party thing.
As far as character meals, there's only one, it's a breakfast at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort in the restaurant 1900 Park Fare (which I've blogged about before). It's a Supercalifragilistic breakfast with Mary Poppins, Winnie the Pooh, and of course, Alice. :)

Recreation on Vacation!

Good Evening! I've had a busy weekend here in Walt Disney World-booking land! I'm not going to dwell on this because I touched base on it in the last post, but I had a client change the number in her party for her vacation in October. No problem at the Contemporary Resort that she went from 3 people to 5....it's 2 queen sized beds and a day bed in the room, but then I had to fix the dining reservations. Ugh. An hour and a half later, I got something very close to what I originally had...close. I've said it before and I'll say it again....make those dining reservations!! :)

On to a new topic! How about some fun recreation today? There's nothing I enjoy more than being on a Walt Disney World vacation and seeing where the day leads me. That's what's great about the flexibility of the park hopper ticket. You can go in and out of any park at any given time of day while they're open. But what if you don't feel like going to a park one day of your vacation and doing something different that the kids will enjoy and equally if you're with adults that everyone will enjoy as well? There are several options!
1. Downtown Disney.
Downtown Disney has a variety of things to do and see..you can go shopping until your hearts desire, have lunch or dinner somewhere like The T-Rex Cafe (brand new...big hit with the kids!), Captain Jack's, or Wolfgang Pucks Cafe. Or you can rent some boats and go out on the lake, take a high-flying hot air balloon ride high in the air and feel like Mary Poppins, or catch a fantastic Cirque du Soleil performance!

2. Hang out at the resorts.
There are a variety of things to do depending on which resort you're wanting to spend time at. You don't have to be staying at any one in particular to be able to take advantage at the activities at another. Some people come just during the holidays to take in all the decorations, trees, gingerbread houses and to "resort hop"!

3. Ft. Wilderness
How about the Circle-D Ranch, a petting zoo, horse back riding, horse drawn carriage rides, boat rentals, hang out and have some lunch at a picnic table overlooking the lake, and for dinner get ready to "hoot and holler" at a showing of the Hoop de Doo Revue?!!? Sign me up! By the way, for some of these, you do have to "sign up"...don't forget to make your reservations!!
