How awesome is THIS picture??! I love it! I am posting this to lead into my blog topic today...scary things at Walt Disney World. There aren't too many, but if you have kids that scare easily there are a few attractions that are best left skipped.
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party boasts the "not so scary" part in it's name, and it's really not scary in my opinon. The parade is fantastic and worth the price of the admission ticket in itself. There have been zombies and mummies marching down Main Street, USA but in a non-threatening kind of way. :) There also is the pirate themed float and all the adorable characters dressed in their Halloween costumes as well. All in all, it's as kid friendly as you can get in my opinion...it is Halloweeen, after all.
As for attractions; of course the first one that comes to mind is the Haunted Mansion in the Magic Kingdom... and yes, I have seen my fair share of children (and adults for that matter) hovering in the corner or shoulder of their fellow passenger in their doom buggy. Located at the intersection of Frontierland and Liberty Square, you can't miss the foreboding entrance and ghost carriage sitting in front. I personally don't think it's that bad, it has an air of "fun" about it...where else can you go on a haunted mansion and really not want to shut your eyes except at Walt Disney World? (Click on the link below to see more information and pictures about these attractions from disneyworld.com.)
The one that is missed by most people though is in Fantasyland. That's right, I said Fantasyland. Snow White's Scary Adventures. Note the word scary in the name of the attraction. And they ain't kiddin'! I hadn't been on it in years, and back in 2001 I took my best friends' son who was about 3 years old on it one day when we were at the Magic Kingdom, just me and him. What a mistake! Man, did I learn the hard way! He was crying and trying to bury himself into my side the whole time in the dark, twisting attraction. And I couldn't really console him because I thought it was pretty scary for kids too!! It felt like the longest 4 minutes of my life!
Lastly, I'm going to go out on a limb here and list two of my least favorite attractions. Everyone has them, as do I, a true Disney fanatic. One is Stitch's Great Escape at the Magic Kingdom and the other is It's Tough to be a Bug! at Disney's Animal Kingdom. I think what makes them scary for me is the one thing that both of these attractions have in common: the pitch black dark. I'm not the biggest fan of enclosed spaces, so when you strap me into a chair, like in Stitch's Great Escape and put me in the pitch black dark and have what feels like things moving around me, that't SO not for me.
Similarly with It's Tough to be a Bug! in the Tree of Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Sit in a theater in the dark with 3D glasses for a 4D experience and I feel bugs moving behind me? Ummmm....no. No thank you, never again. I've been on them both once, no need for me ever to go on them again. If you want to go on either of these attractions and you're with me, I will happily go on the "sit on the bench and wait" ride and be very content. :)
